| | | Thirty years ago stimulated by a childhood collecting British Monarchs on postage stamps, and a thin paperback book"Banknotes of the Government of India and Reserve Bank of India" by R.Leader I commenced my search for George V Indian banknotes. Suddenly with the 2006 release of the latest World Paper Money General Issues 11thEdition,they have become valuable collectors items! I am pleased to share with you some of the background history, and images from my collection. The earliest pictorial notes of George V were issued in 1917 as the result of a crisis in precious metal stocks due to World War One. The one rupee and the 2.8 rupee were the first to be issued. Later in May 1923 the first notes of 10 Rupees with the portrait of George V, and the new notes with a picture of George V of 5 rupees followed .The King was depicted wearing the Imperial Crown and the robes of Star of India. In April 1928 India's own security press at Nasik for the design and printing of banknotes commenced operations and the supply of notes from England progressively ceased. The improved security features included changed watermarks, intricate portrait designs and multicoloured printing. The note were issued in denominations of 5,10,50,100,500,1000,and 10,000.
